Did you know?
Sleeping with bedroom doors shut can increase your chances of surviving a fire. According to the Red Cross, an individual may have less than two minutes to escape from a burning structure. Close to 4,000 Americans die each year from house fires many of which can be prevented with the proper knowledge.
Smoke alarms save lives!
Having a working smoke alarm increases chances of survival by up to 50%. A working smoke detector will alert occupants of the presence of smoke. Each room of your home should be equipped with one. Be sure to test alarms once a month and change batteries twice a year. Change your alarms at least every 10 years (or as needed) and be sure to label alarm with date of installation.
A portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or keeping it contained until the fire department arrives. Be sure to have at least one extinguisher on each level of your home.
Begin by drawing a floor plan of your home. Plan two escape routes from every room. Have a set meeting place where everyone will gather a safe distance from your home. Be sure to practice your escape plans and have periodic drills to ensure each member of your family is familiar with the escape routes. In a fire every second counts, time is crucial.
